In just two years, between 1784 and 1786, Mozart composed no less than twelve piano concertos -- a staggering number. Often described as one of the most light-hearted and buoyant among these is the Concerto in F major K459, sometimes called 'the second Coronation Concerto'. The nickname comes from the fact that Mozart would later choose to perform it, along with the 'Coronation Concerto' in D major, during the festivities surrounding the coronation of Emperor Leopold II in Frankfurt-am-Main in 1790. Its companion work on this fourth disc in Ronald Brautigam's survey hails from the same period: begun in 1784, the Concerto in A major K488 was completed in March 1786, at the same time as Mozart was putting the finishing touches to his opera Le nozze di Figaro. It is one of only three piano concertos in which Mozart uses clarinets in the orchestra, resulting in a very particular sound world, especially in the magical slow movement. Mozart clearly held the work in high regard, and described it as one of his most select compositions 'which I keep just for myself and an lite circle of music lovers', and later audiences have agreed with him. Ronald Brautigam has been described as 'an absolutely instinctive Mozartian... with melodic playing of consummate beauty' (International Record Review), and he is once again supported by the period orchestra Die Klner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens in a partnership which more than one reviewer has termed 'ideal'.

Brautigam first came to prominence in 1984 when he was awarded the Netherlands Music Prize, the highest distinction the Netherlands bestows on musicians.

Since the 1900s French composers have advanced the harp to new levels of virtuosity and expression, with growing technical demands. Caplet's Divertissements features some of the most unique and perfectly executed writing in the harp's entire literature; great technical poise is required to deliver the bold pedal glissandi. Tournier and Debussy established the harp as a crucial exponent of the dreamy impressionist style; its colours and sonority are key. A century later Mantovani utilises a breath-taking spectrum of attacks and techniques: furious scalic motives, nail sounds, bisbigliandi, and sudden, shrill fortes which makes Tocar a testament to the harp's more virile characteristics. Schoeller's Esstal is in sharp contrast; its delicate figurations create a more peaceful mood and demonstrate another side to this versatile instrument. The programme closes with Faur's Impromptu which makes use of harmonics, glissandi, cross fingerings and rich arpeggios.

Katarina & Svante Henryson – High, Low or In Between (2015) [Classical, eClassical, FLAC 96kHz/24bit]

Recorded: April 2014 at Artipelag, Gustavsberg, Sweden

Svante Henryson, the Swedish cellist, composer, double bass and electric bass guitar player, has been awarded the Nordic Council Music Award of some 50'000 Dollars in a ceremony on Iceland. Starting as a double-bass player in the Oslo Phil, he continued as a rock musician in one of Sweden's more famous hard rock bands, while at all times exploring the classical cello in his own imaginative way, fusing the classical with impulses from other genres.
I have deeply admired him for many years, but only when hearing him and his singing wife Katarina (of Real Group fame) at a private party, had the chance to really approach them with a recording idea. This materialized and the SACD was recentky released.
We take this opportunity to re-present it at very favourable conditions here and now for a few days. Congratulations, Svante! Way to go!!! And congrats to the Nordic Council for a choice, as excellent as it is daring! --Robert von Bahr
