Vapor Trails is the seventeenth studio album by Canadian rock band
Rush, produced by Paul Northfield and released in May 2002. Its
release marked the first studio album for the band in six years,
(since Test for Echo in 1996) because of personal tragedies that
befell drummer Neil Peart in the late 1990s. According to the
band, the entire developmental process for Vapor Trails was
extremely taxing and took approximately 14 months to finish, by
far the longest the band had ever spent writing and recording a
studio album. Despite controversy surrounding its production and
sound quality, the album debuted to moderate praise and was
supported by the band’s first tour in six years, including first-
ever concerts in Mexico City and Brazil, where they played to some
of the largest crowds of their career. The album was certified
gold in Canada in August 2002.

The song “Ghost Rider” appeared on the album and was written by
Peart as a tribute to his travels around North America after his
loss, while “One Little Victory” served as the first single in
order to announce the band’s return from hiatus.
Dissatisfied with the original audio mix of the album, which
received criticism for being overly compressed, Rush had the album
remixed and re-released as Vapor Trails Remixed in 2013. It was
released separately and as a part of the box set The Studio Albums
1989-2007.

Test for Echo is the sixteenth studio album by Canadian rock band
Rush, released in 1996. It marks the final Rush work prior to the
events in Neil Peart’s life that put the band on hiatus for
several years. He recorded a majority of his drum tracks for the
album using traditional grip, after receiving drum lessons from
jazz instructor Freddie Gruber.

The cover displays an inukshuk, native to the band’s home country
of Canada. Created by the Inuit, an inuksuk is a stone figure in
the shape of a human used to mark a food cache, hunting ground or
a place where someone lost their life.

The title track reached #1 on the mainstream rock chart. “Driven”
became a bass showcase for Geddy Lee during live performances,
while “Resist” was rearranged as an acoustic song on the Vapor
Trails and R30 tours. Since then, the band has not performed any
tracks from the album in concert. It was remastered and reissued
twice: in 2004 as a continuation of “The Rush Remasters” set and
in 2013 as a part of the box set The Studio Albums 1989-2007.

Signals is the ninth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush,
released in 1982. It was the follow-up to the successful Moving
Pictures. Stylistically, the album was a continuation of Rush’s
foray into the technology-oriented 1980s through increased use of
electronic instrumentation such as keyboards, sequencers, and
electric violin. Other noticeable changes were decreased average
song length and lyrical compression. The album reached #10 on the
Billboard album charts and was certified platinum (one million
copies sold) by the RIAA in November 1982.

Presto is the thirteenth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush,
released in 1989. It was recorded at Le Studio in Morin Heights
and at McClear Place in Toronto. Presto was Rush’s first album
with their new international label Atlantic Records, which the
band signed to in early 1989 after deciding not to renew its
contract with Mercury/PolyGram Records.

The band had intended to co-produce the album with Peter Collins,
who had produced the previous two studio albums, Power Windows and
Hold Your Fire; however, he reluctantly declined the offer for
personal reasons. Instead, Rupert Hine, who had been approached
for Grace Under Pressure, produced the album.

All singles released from the album (“Show Don’t Tell”, “The Pass”
and “Superconductor”) charted, with “Show Don’t Tell” hitting #1
on the Album Rock Tracks chart. The album itself charted at #16 on
the Billboard 200 album chart, and sales of Presto earned the band
a gold record (sales in excess of 500,000 copies) in the US, and
Platinum in Canada. The album has been remastered and reissued
twice: once in 2004 as a continuation of “The Rush Remasters”
series and again in 2013 as a part of the box set The Studio
Albums 1989-2007.

Power Windows is the 11th studio album by Canadian rock band Rush,
released in 1985. Power Windows was the first Rush album to be
produced by Peter Collins and the album was recorded at The Manor
in England, AIR Studios in Montserrat and at Sarm East Studios in
London. It was also the first Rush album to ever be released
directly to CD.

Power Windows introduced more keyboard synthesizers into the
band’s sound. “The Big Money” and “Mystic Rhythms” were both made
into music videos featured in MTV’s rotation at the time. This was
the era in which the band were expanding into new directions from
their progressive rock base, and they “tightened up their sidelong
suites and rhythmic abstractions into balled-up song fists, art-
pop blasts of angular, slashing guitar, spatial keyboards and
hyperpercussion, all resolved with forthright melodic sense”.

Permanent Waves is the seventh studio album by Canadian rock band
Rush, released on January 1, 1980. It was recorded at Le Studio,
Morin Heights, Quebec, and mixed at Trident Studios in London, UK.
Permanent Waves became Rush’s first US top five album hitting #4
and was the band’s fifth gold (eventually platinum) selling album.
The album also marks a distinct transition from long, conceptual
pieces, into a more accessible, radio-friendly style and
consequently, a significant expansion in the band’s sales with
hits such as “The Spirit of Radio” and “Freewill” seeing
considerable radio airplay.

Moving Pictures is the eighth studio album by Canadian rock band
Rush. It was recorded and mixed from October to November 1980 at
Le Studio located in Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada, and released
on February 12, 1981.

Moving Pictures became the band’s biggest selling album in the US
rising to #3 on the Billboard charts and remains the band’s most
popular and commercially successful studio recording to date. The
album was one of the first to be certified multi-platinum by the
RIAA upon establishment of the certification in October 1984, and
eventually went quadruple platinum.

Following the formula of their previous album, Permanent Waves,
Moving Pictures follows a more radio-friendly format and includes
several of the band’s signature tracks, including the hits “Tom
Sawyer” and “Limelight”, the FM rock radio standard, “Red
Barchetta”, and the band’s highly praised instrumental, “YYZ”.
Moving Pictures is one of two Rush albums listed in 1001 Albums
You Must Hear Before You Die (2112 is the other). Kerrang!
magazine listed the album at #43 among the “100 Greatest Heavy
Metal Albums of All Time”. In 2012, Moving Pictures was listed as
the #10 ‘Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time’ by Rolling
Stone.

The album cover art is a visual pun of movers physically carrying
paintings, while several songs from the album are connected to
motion pictures, with “moving pictures” meaning movies. This
second meaning is explicitly shown on the back of the album, where
a movie crew is seen filming the scene from the front cover. A
third meaning is taken from bystanders who are watching the movers
and are visibly emotionally moved by the paintings, making them
“moving pictures”.

Hold Your Fire is the twelfth studio album by Canadian rock band
Rush, released on September 8, 1987. It was recorded at The Manor
Studio in Oxfordshire, Ridge Farm Studio in Surrey, Air Studios in
Montserrat and McClear Place in Toronto.

Hold Your Fire was the last Rush studio album released outside
Canada by PolyGram/Mercury.

Rush continued to explore new songwriting territory in Hold Your
Fire. ‘Til Tuesday bassist and vocalist Aimee Mann contributed
vocals to “Open Secrets” and “Time Stand Still”, appearing in the
Zbigniew Rybczynski-directed video for the latter.

The album was not as commercially successful as most of the band’s
releases of the 1980s, only peaking at #13 on the Billboard
charts, the lowest debut for a Rush album since Hemispheres.[4]
However, it did eventually go gold.
